General Information
Evia is an island and also a continental region that unfolds at the north-eastern coast of Central Greece. Evia combines everything: rich vegetation and beautiful forests and coasts with beautiful and sandy beaches. It is the second bigger island in extent after Crete and is in a preferential geographic place.
Chalkida
The capital of the island, Chalkis "links" the island with the mainland of Greece with the new suspension bridge but also with the old mobile bridge where the visitor can admire the tidal phenomenon a unique characteristic of Chalkis. Chalkis is a very beautiful city spreading out in the Euboean gulf and is important from geographic point and was always a crossroad of populations and cultures.
in Chalkis you must visit
• the old mobile bridge and watch the tidal phenomenon.
• the castle Karababa, built in a strategic area on the hill Fourka of the Boeotian coast as it controls the narrow passage of Evripos and the city of Chalkis. The position of the Castle is identified with the ancient city Kanithos. In the enclosure of the castle is a temple dedicated to the Prophet Ilias, dated from 1895.
South from Chalkis towards Lampsako, Basiliko and Leykanti the visitor will see the small but fertile plain of Lilanta river, for which in the antiquity fought two powerful cities - states of Evia. Chalkis and Eretria.
