General Information

AndrosAndros is the northern island in Cyclades and the second bigger after Naxos.
Scattered with tenths of white settlements, and with cosmopolitan tourist resorts, Andros is the ideal place for vacations, even for a weekend, since its so close to Rafina port.
In the antiquity it was named Ydrousa, Gavros or Lasia. According to mythology Andros took its name from Andros, grandson of Apollo. The island was inhabited by Kares, the Foinikes, Cretes and in 1000 BC from Iones.
Imposing mansions, small uphill roads, courtyards filled with scents from basil and spearmint, dominate in Chora, the capital. Chora is on a peninsula, between two big beaches, Nimporio and Paraporti.
The old city will charm and it will lead you to the remnants of the Venetian castle, on an islet that is connected to the land with a graphic bridge, built in the 13th century from the Marino Dandolo.
In the big square the visitor can admire the statue of the “Afanous Nayti”, work of the sculptor Michali Tomporou.
In the entry of the harbour is the eminent lighthouse Tourlitis. Visit the churches of Palatiani, Saint George, Virgin Mary Odigitria and Saint Andrea of the Latins. In Andros is the Archaeological Museum, donated to the state from Vasilis and the Eliza Goylandri, with important exhibits. You should see the statue of Hermes of Andros, a marvellous marble copy of Hermes of Praxitelis, from the Hellenistic period, which constitutes a sample of the culture of the island in those years.
The Museum of Modern Art, in Andros tends to make the island a metropolis of good arts, since visitors come from all over the world, in order to see the exhibitions of work of big painters like Matis, Picasso etc. In the Museum you can see samples of the work of the big sculptor of Andros Micheal Tomprou.
The Naval Museum of Andros includes rich collection of models of boats, naval instruments etc
