General Information

A small island that has the shape of a pentagon and lies between Milos and Sifnos. It has an area of 38 sq.km. and is 88 nautical miles from Piraeus. The island is full of hills and the higher top is in the middles of the southwest cast called Paliokastro. The people deal with the shipping, agriculture and the excavation of "chalk".
According to the mythology, the island took its name from Kimolo, husband of the daughter of Tavros, Sidis. Later it was named Echinousses.
In the islands capital Chora the white Cycladic houses are clustered around the castle.
The island did not have its own history, in general it followed the destiny of Milos.
During the Franks occupation, Markos Sanoudos, connected Kimolos with the Naxos duchy (1207). Later it was occupied by the Turks and during the Russian-Turkish war (1770-1774), from the Russians. After the liberation, it became a part of the Greek state.
