General Information
Situated to the west of Rhodes, Chalki is a small island, 28 sq.km but is inhabited since ancient times. Chalki took its name from the cooper (Greek word is chalkos) once mined here.
It is characterized as the island of friendship and peace and is ideal for quite holidays.
The people are mainly occupied with sponge fishing, livestock and tourism.
The island capital and port is Chalki or otherwise called Nimporio is built amphitheatrical on the sides of the hill with beautiful houses overlooking the bay.
Sights
• the monasteries: Archangel Michael with a rare icon, St.John Alarga that has houses where you can stay as a guest and the monastery of Agia Triada.
• the remains of a temple dedicated to Apollo in Peykia
• "Kamenos Spilios" in Amiglai where the Venetian admiral Morozini killed the people who found resort in the cave, by putting a fire in the entrance. This was his revenge because the people of Chalki informed the people of Rhodes of his coming so he couldn't occupy it.
• St. Nicholas church established in 1861, with a rare woodcut temple and hagiographies.
