General Information

Karpathos is the second bigger island of Dodecanese with area 301 sq. km. The central and north part is mountainous with thick forests and graphic villages, while the south part has fertile valleys with springs, and beaches in paradise bays.
Karpathos or Pigadia capital town and main port of the island, is identified as the ancient Potidaeo or Posseidaeon. At the entrance to the port, is the rock bearing the remains of the acropolis.

Sights

• in Arkasa identified at the same position and with the same name (Arkesia) like the ancient town, the Fort of Paleokastro with remains covering a long historical period, from ancient times through to the era of the Venetian and later on the Ottoman Rule, and the remains of a an early Christian basilica (5-6 century)
• in Lefkos the ancient Akropolis with parts of the fortification wall and mosaics and remains of an early Christian basilica (5th century AC).
• in Olympos ruins of the ancient city Vrykous
• Saria, an island north of Karpathos, once united with Karpathos. In the narrow pass between Karpathos and Saria are the ruins of the ancient city Nisyros.
• in Pigadia the ruins of Agia Foteini and early Christian church (5-6 century)
• Koraki, the top of the hill over Pigadia where the ancient acropolis of Karpathos was
• Sokastro in Lefko once a peninsula and today an island of its own with very important remains of Byzantine and Medieval origin.
• in Olympos the church of the Virgin Mary (16th century)
