General Information
The island was shaped from volcanic eruptions and is one of the two volcanoes in Greece.
According to mythology Nisyros was made when Neptune chasing after the giant Polyvoti broke a part of island Kos with his trident and throwed it at him. That part was Nisyros.
In the center of the island are craters and the volcano caldera.
The villages have the characteristic look of islands with with alleys and traditional houses with their colorful windows.

• Castle Spiliani, a building of the knights of St.John (1315).
• Monastery of Virgin Spiliani, protector of the island
• The churches of Agios Nikitas, Virgin Potamitissa, Agios Savvas and Agios Nikolaos.
• The renovated windmill in the island port.
• The buildings of the Municipality and Primary School.
• Palaiokastro, 4 km from the city, with remainings of the ancient city wall.
