General Information

Sporades are the islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnisos, Peristera, Kyra Panagia, Skyros and some more islets most of which are uninhabited. Administratively Skyros belongs to Evia prefecture, while the rest belong to the prefecture of Magnisia.

It is believed that Sporades were connected with Magnisias nome. However a part was sunk in the sea and only the taller parts of this land remained out of the sea and formed these islands.

The most important of these islands are:

Skiathos, has an extent of 48 sq. km. This island is covered at 70% of pine forests.

Skopelos, has an extent of 96 sq. km. Its grounds are also covered at its bigger part with pine forests.

Alonnisos, has an extent of 65 sq. km. It also has pine forests as well as olive groves in its northern part.

Skyros, has an extent of 210 sq. km. It is the biggest in extent. The grounds are mountainous and in its coasts shape a lot of small bays. Famous are its small horses and its marbles. It is also famous for the popular art and especially for the handicraft. Famed are the islands architecture, the woodcarving and weaving.
