SPORADES ISLANDS: ALONNISSOS

General Information

Alonissos is known for its unequaled natural beauty. The southern part has pine trees areas with peripatetic paths and beautiful landscapes, and also beaches with crystal waters.

Because of its geographic position, Alonissos was a sea passage of the Aegean Sea. During its history it is presented with various names like Ikos, Evonimos, Liodromia and Hiliodromia. It isn’t identified with the ancient Alonissos which probably was the neighboring island Kyra Panagia. Alonissos was a commercial station at the Minoan period and flourished with the growth of viticulture and trade of wine for which it is famous until today.  Ancient findings of fortification and buildings at the area Kokkinokastro lead us to believe that here was the ancient city Ikos.

In 1992, in Alonissos and the surrounding small islands, was founded the National Marine Park of Alonissos and North Sporades for the protection of the seal monachus-monachus one of the most infrequent mammals of the Mediterranean. The Marine Park is a unique biotope that apart from the protection deals also with the research and the care of the Mediterranean seal and other species.

Patitiri is the port and commercial center of Alonissos and its name derives from the winepresses that used to be here.

Chora or Alonissos is the capital of the island built on the top of the hill with traditional settlements of stone houses with colorful doors and windows.
Alonissos is an ideal destination for walkers. Routes with paved paths give the possibility to enjoy nature with the rich flora and fauna. Alonissos accommodates the central office of the National Academy of Classical Homeopathy.

KYRA PANAGIA or PELAGONISI
An island at the north-eastern of Alonissos, dedicated to Virgin Mary. At the top of the mountain is the monastery of Kyra Panagia.

PIPERI
It is the centre of the Marine Park. Its coasts are steep and shape a lot of caves. In these caves find shelter the Mediterranean seals monachus-monachus and rare birds. The island is covered with a dense forest of pine.

GIOURA
An island with steep coasts and peculiar mountainous relief. In Gioura lives a rear goat and various species of infrequent birds. In a cave that is considered to be the cave of Cyclop Polifimos have been discovered important findings of human activity dated from 9.000 B.C.

PSATHOURA
The most northern island of Sporades with volcanic ground and crystal sea.
