In general
Larissa is the capital of Larissa prefecture and is on the right bank of river Pinios and at the north-east of the fertile Thessalian valley. It is one of the ancienter cities of Greece with rich history since the Stone Age. According to mythology the city was built from Lariso son of Pelasgos. Larissa was the capital of Pelasgiotida, one of the four tetrarchies of Thessaly and prospers in the 6th and 5th century B.C. and during the Byzantine era.
Archaeological excavations have brought to light a lot of discoveries with most important the two ancient theatres. The first one is on the south side of the hill Fortress and was built in the end of the 3rd century B.C. and was used until the Roman times when the second smaller theater was built.
Larissa today is a modern city full of life with a lot of industries and intense commercial activity.
You should visit the Archaeological Museum and the Folklore and Historical Museum of Larissa.
In the prefecture of Larissa are produced cereals, cotton, tobacco, vegetables, wine and raki (Tirnavos) which is considered one of the best in Greece.
